National Drought Management Authority

The National Drought Management Authority implements a European Union funded Drought Contingency Fund (DCF) to cushion lives and livelihoods of communities vulnerable to drought. LIVESTOCK FEEDING CENTRES Under the DCF, the NDMA has implemented a livestock feeding centre model. These are integrated village-based communal feeding lots in which animals are provided with water, hay, drought pellets, Urea Molasses Mineral (UMM) blocks and veterinary services.

SLAUGHTER DESTOCKING: DRIED MEAT RATIONS Among activities supported under the DCF is slaughter destocking, which is carried out when animals have lost their commercial value. The meat from slaughtered animals is made into dried rations and distributed to schools in drought-prone areas or the most vulnerable and poor households.

SUPPORT TO STRATEGIC BOREHOLES Activities implemented under the DCF include support to strategic boreholes in drought prone areas to keep them running during drought periods.

LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTER DESTOCKING Among activities supported under the DCF is slaughter destocking, which is carried out when animals have lost their commercial value. The meat from slaughtered animals is distributed to the most vulnerable and poor households.

COMMERCIAL LIVESTOCK OFFTAKE Among activities supported under the DCF is commercial accelerated destocking. Under the programme, NDMA purchased and relocated animals to the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) ranch in Galana with the objective of restocking some to the drought affected and vulnerable households in the recovery phase.

EDUCATION: FOOD FOR FEES Among activities supported under the DCF is food-for-fees to ensure retention of students from pastoralist background in school.

PROVISION OF LIVESTOCK FEED SUPPLEMENTS  Among activities supported under the DCF are feeding strategies of affected livestock through the supply of animal feeds. This activity targets the core breeding herds to allow the survival of animals throughout the drought spell. The main types of feeds distributed are drought pellets/mash and Urea Molasses Mineral Blocks (UMMB).
